MISTAKE #2 - Overly High Expectations

Some users expect EtherNet/IP to move data around a network like files are moved around their office server. This is a mistake for a lot of reasons. Your office network has very sophisticated, fast, high bandwidth computers while your industrial devices operate much more slowly with data paths that are ½ or ¼ as wide. Even though PLCs operate on Ethernet, most PLCs are simply not equipped to receive high volumes of data from a device on an EtherNet/IP network. For example, the Rockwell Automation ControlLogix can only send and receive about 450 bytes not the 1500+ bytes that can be moved in a single Ethernet frame. Many people also fail to grasp that the processing time of a TCP/IP stack is significant and that the stack selection matters a great deal. Processing of the Ethernet, IP and TCP layers can add from 25 to 400msecs to the overall response time. Which leaks us to Mistake #3.		EtherNet/IP Embedded Gateway
