WHY SHOULD YOU USE THE EIP ALTIVAR 31 OPTION CARD?

Ethernet is no longer an option for Industrial Devices – ETHERNET IS A REQUIREMENT. Ethernet is the fastest growing segment of Industrial Networking for one reason – The Market (Your Customers) Loves Ethernet. The trend is clear. An awful lot of the systems that have used DeviceNet are going to move to EtherNet/IP. EtherNet/IP is the Ethernet solution used in the Rockwell Automation architecture and the one of the select few Ethernet application layers that will dominate the Industrial Automation marketplace.

You can now control your Altivar 31 Drives from a Rockwell Automation ControlLogix, CompactLogix or any other EtherNet/IP Client device quickly and easily with the EtherNet/IP option card from Real Time Automation. Developed specifically for the Altivar 31 Drive you can field upgrade your Altivar 31 Drives to have EtherNet/IP and Modbus TCP communications.

The EtherNet/IP option card transforms your Altivar 31 Drive into an EtherNet/IP Server device supporting the same network representation as drives from Rockwell and other drive manufacturers. In the terminology of the ODVA (Open Device Vendor Organization), an Altivar 31 with the EtherNet/IP option card supports the complete Motor Drive Profile. That means that all the functionality defined for Motor Drives by the ODVA is supported in the option card.

“Our first experience using RTA has been a resounding success. The development proceeded smoothly and the delivered product meets all specifications. RTA kept us well informed throughout the course of the project, applying good project tracking and development/testing status reporting tools. If an unexpected issue arose, they solved it quickly or advised us accurately as to when to expect a solution. RTA also provided training to our in-house maintenance department and to our customer support center as the development completed. Overall, a great team…”

The EtherNet Option card is installed in the Altivar 31 Drive. It connects to the Modbus RTU link internal to the drive and presents an external RJ45 Ethernet connection to the EtherNet/IP Network.

“I have found RTAs knowledge of PLC networks, especially EtherNet/IP and SDS, to be extremely valuable. Their years of experience allowed them to develop plug-in modules to our specifications more quickly and less costly than an in-house development. Along the way RTA, Inc. provided quality documentation and hardware, well-debugged software and a friendly communicative attitude. We will continue to use RTA, Inc. in the future.”

Altivar 31 EtherNet/IP Block Diagram
The Altivar 31 Ethernet Option Card exchanges Modbus RTU data with the Altivar 31 Drive. The drive data from the AV31 is mapped to the standard structure of an EtherNet/IP device. This structure, called an Object Model, presents the AV31 as a EtherNet/IP Server device to the EtherNet/IP Network. Any EtherNet/IP Client, including Rockwell Automation Clients like ControlLogix and CompactLogix, can be used to access the AV31 and perform all standard drive functions. Both EtherNet/IP I/O and Explicit Messaging is supported to access the AV31.

“I was extremely pleased with amount and the quality of support I received from RTA, Inc.. Porting their code over to my non-standard application was a minor monumental task to say the least, but they were with me every step of the way. RTA, Inc. was as determined to make my project work as I was, Thanks RTA, Inc.!”
