In 1994, DeviceNet was introduced by Allen-Bradley and made an open specification at the request of major automotive customers like General Motors. Open DeviceNet Vendor Association became the owner of the technology, and within a few years over 300 vendors were producing DeviceNet products. DeviceNet truly “broke the ice” in the United States for open protocols in automation, just as Profibus had already been doing in Europe before that. In fact, one of the reasons for DeviceNet’s inception was that Profibus was coming (thanks to Siemens) and represented a threat to U.S. vendors.

Today DeviceNet is very popular in automotive, semiconductor, material handling and many other parts of the automation business. In fact, DeviceNet capability is a prerequisite for participation in many new automation projects. This paper is about getting that capability. Quite frankly, today it is a mistake to not support DeviceNet.

You can now add DeviceNet communications to your product quickly and easily with the DeviceNet Slave development kit from Real Time Automation, Inc.. Developed specifically for industrial platforms and fully integrated with any number of CAN Controllers, you can have DeviceNet Slave communications in days not weeks, months or years. The development kit includes everything you need to implement your DeviceNet networking solution; “no royalty”, single task source code, sample objects, an DeviceNet Client tool, a ready-to-run sample application, complete documentation and much more.

"It was a real pleasure working with RTA, Inc. on our recent project. They took the time to identify our needs and when an "off the shelf" solution was not going to fulfill our needs, they quickly delivered a customized version that fit the bill perfectly."

"I have found RTAs knowledge of PLC networks, especially DeviceNet and SDS, to be extremely valuable. Their years of experience allowed them to develop plug-in modules to our specifications more quickly and less costly than an in-house development. Along the way RTA, Inc. provided quality documentation and hardware, well-debugged software and a friendly communicative attitude. We will continue to use RTA, Inc. in the future."
